this bathroom needs a major renovation: outdated vanity with ugly formica counter, plain mirror glued to the wall, recessed lights, ugly medicine cabinet, carpeted floors. we knew it would be a few years before we could afford to renovate. it is always a good idea to live in a house for a while before doing any major work so you can see what would work best in the space. all the fixtures were in good shape, so we decided to do a quick cosmetic makeover. we removed the medicine cabinet and flat mirror. we painted the countertop and door black and replaced the knobs on the vanity. we used a peel and stick paper with tropical band leaves that I have always admired. it is perfect for a beach house, after all. the vintage mirror had a French style to it so we added a “Salle de Bain” sign on the door to help guests find it! recessed lighting in a low ceiling (only 7 feet) made faces look grim in the mirror so we used a fitter to hang frosted globe lamps which give a much more diffused light and make everyone look better. replacing the towel rack and switch plate with gold added to the glamour provided by the mirror. the accents on the counter are from target and anthropologie. this quickie makeover only cost a few hundred dollars but should last for a few years!
